Decorative Roadway Lighting on Roosevelt Road in The Village of Broadview

Introduction

In February 2014, the state of Illinois issued contracts for reconstruction and Decorative Roadway Lighting on Roosevelt Rd. in the Village of Broadview.

The Village turned to Hancock Engineering who specializes in the design of roadway and area lighting, including lighting of streets and highways, parks and recreational areas for the street lighting portion of the project.  Broadview was an early leader in LED lighting conversions, primarily in residential areas, and they partnered with Lighting Solutions of Illinois (LSI), a Will Group Company on those early projects.  The LSI team proposed an offering for the project, and the Village was gracious to give the opportunity.  Hancock Engineering contacted LSI about the new opportunity in Broadview and together we identified the key requirements and the best solution for the Village.

The Story of Broadview

Given the Village of Broadview’s early move to LED Lighting, it made sense that they would be one of the first municipalities to convert one of their state highways to LED. Broadview continues to be a local leader in energy efficient infrastructure.

The Challenge Faced

The challenge of LED conversion on state highways is assuring that all parties involved are satisfied. The Village wanted a design that would be pleasing to their government officials, and more importantly to their taxpayers. Such design on a state highway also has to satisfy the requirements of the State of Illinois, while also being compatible with the overall roadway.

Why Broadview Chose The Will Group

The Village had built a rapport and a trust with Lighting Solutions, a Will Group Company through the residential conversion, and desired to continue that partnership on the state highway project.

How did The Will Group Respond?

Lighting Solutions, a Will Group Company collaborated with the Village, manufacturers, design consultants, and the state of Illinois, to provide the perfect product to satisfy the needs of all stakeholders.

The Results

Working together on the design of the new lighting system strengthened our relationship with The Village, while providing yet another opportunity to work with the state and the consultants. On average, LEDs are up to 50 percent more energy efficient than traditional sodium bulbs and can be expected to last 15 to 20 years. LED Streetlighting provides superior photometric performance, reliable lighting with greatly reduced maintenance and economical and environmental advantages compared to traditional HID streetlights.
