About Wheaton
The City of Wheaton was ready to upgrade their decorative fixtures in 2014. Wheaton officials wanted residents to pick the new energy-efficient street lights, and elicited the expertise of a vendor who would provide options that would that eventually will become standard in residential neighborhoods throughout town. Lighting Solutions of Illinois, a Will Group Company was able to provide ten samples from multiple different manufacturers to allow the residents to vote on the fixture types.
Residents gave feedback in an online survey, sharing their thoughts on the style of light fixture and color temperature they prefer.
The Challenge Faced
Wheaton officials were not satisfied with the original high-pressure sodium lights, which burn more than twice the energy and only last a fraction as long as LED’s. Converting to LED’s would benefit the environment and reduce the amount of time staff invests maintaining the lights with regular lamp changes.

The Solution
Once the new light was chosen through a competitive bid process, the city also modified its engineering requirements for lighting in residential neighborhoods. The revised regulation ensured that any new lights added to a neighborhood, as in the case of a new subdivision, meet the same performance specifications as these LED fixtures.
A fixture was selected and the city began the ten year replacement process to convert all residential decorative fixtures. To date, Lighting Solutions of Illinois, a Will Group Company has helped to procure over $90,000 in incentives through DCEO and ComEd for the new LED streetlights.
