City of Joliet – GIS & Utility Data Management
Overview:
The City relied on outdated and inconsistent paper records across multiple departments, including Public Utilities, Public Works, and the Fire Department. These records often did not align, making it difficult to accurately track hydrant conditions or report how many were out of service.
TWG was selected for its experience with municipalities and its ability to translate management data needs into practical, efficient tools for field teams.
What TWG Delivered:
– Application Development: Designed and implemented a GIS-based application to track hydrant inspections and repairs.
– Database Creation: Built a centralized GIS database to manage hydrant and utility data.
– Field & Management Alignment: Delivered a solution that supports both field usability and management reporting.
– Training & Implementation: Trained Fire Department personnel, leading to long-term adoption of the system.
– Utility Locating: Established a streamlined process to locate and update water, storm, and sanitary utilities within the GIS database.
Results:
TWG’s solution gave the City accurate, real-time visibility into its infrastructure. Within one year, out-of-service hydrants were reduced by 90%. The system has now been in use for over a decade, supporting daily operations across departments while maintaining a reliable and up-to-date utility GIS database.
