With our expertise, our team took into consideration: the desired lighting direction, elevation differences, and lakefront location while designing the custom poles. Designing with these factors in mind resulted in glare free lighting in the skating area, the use of steel material for the pole, and a 5-year warrantied V-PRO Finish System. Our team worked closely alongside electricians, light fixture manufactures, and an engineering design team to ensure full compatibility and safety.
Bringing joy for decades to come
In 2013, Valmont was approached with the opportunity to create custom poles that would light up Maggie Daley Park’s skating ribbon by the Chicago Park District.
As Valmont’s trusted engineers, TWG began designing the poles. With our expertise, our team took into consideration: the desired lighting direction, elevation differences, and lakefront location while designing the custom poles. Our team worked closely alongside electricians, light fixture manufactures, and an engineering design team to ensure full compatibility and safety.
As 34 span wire poles were ready to light, the skating ribbon opened successfully in December of 2014. The skating ribbon will continue to bring bliss to visitors thanks to the project architect’s vision, the city of Chicago’s influence to improve the park, and Valmont and their team.

Custom Poles Help Chicago’s Navy Pier Reach Its Centennial Vision
Navy Pier’s 100th Birthday
Project Type: Area Lighting
Due to the Navy Pier’s 100th birthday, their team began executing its Centennial Vision initiative. The Navy Pier team had a vision to redesign the area but relied on Valmont Structures and TWG to make their street and area lighting concepts come to life.
With Valmont and TWG design and engineering expertise, they were able to meet all the Navi Piers teams wants and needs. They provided an elegant design that stood out, used aluminum as the street lighting pole material because of its corrosion resistance, gave the taller steel area lighting structures a V-PRO 57 finish for maximum durability, used a custom-developed dividing wall within the pole, and consulted the electrical contractor during the installation process to ensure maximum success.
Thanks to our teams commitment to helping the Navy Pier’s centennial vision become reality, the pier began its new journey in July 2016.
